Updates to TrueFans book icon

I have made a post-production update to the chapter called TrueFans: chapters icon. Ignore what I said about a different screen, BUT, as well as scrolling down you can click on the icon that looks like a bulleted list NOT a little book icon. It also might not be 4th from the left, it might be third. I HAVE updated the photo that corresponds to this chapter, so that is correct . . . for now!.

Welcome Back to Podcasting 2.0

In practice. It's homework time, so let's find those chapters. Most of the features we'll be talking about on this show can be located in your listening app from what I'm going to call the Play Screen. That's when the episode you are listening to fills the whole of your screen.

You can listen to an episode while scrolling through your app looking for other shows, and the episode you're listening to will in that case be shown in a bar at the bottom of the screen. You need to click on that bar or perhaps on an arrow in that bar to open up the full Play Screen.

While in this screen, on many 2.0 podcast apps, the chapter title, photo and link, if the podcaster has put these in, and I'll be explaining how to do this in a future episode, are clearly shown. So in most cases, you don't even need to locate the chapter's area to see what chapter you're on and the image associated with that chapter.

Therefore, you might be walking the dog, or on a machine at the gym, or doing something less healthy, and you can simply glance at your phone or tablet to see something useful. Go on then, give it a try now. Cool, huh?

And if you're unsure of the relevance of this image, either you have not listened to the Value for Value episode with David and Leila Medus, in which case you better get back there and listen to that and any other early ones you might have missed, or you have listened to that episode and just forgotten the Garfield reference, in which case, don't worry, I completely understand.

The way to find the full list of chapters for an episode and be able to move around varies depending on the app you're listening on.

Remember, you can see which listening apps support the chapter's feature by visiting newpodcastapps.com or podcasting2.org as detailed in the 101 and 2.0 Podcast Basics Homework episode, which you have of course listened to.

I'll give instructions for a few of the apps here, and if I don't mention the app you're listening on, then I'm sure you'll be able to work it out based on the descriptions I do give. They're not worlds apart in user experience after all.

I have of course illustrated the steps using photos, therefore giving a really good example of when photos attached to podcast chapters are super useful.

If you're listening on the Fountain app, the icon that signifies chapters is the little open book, but you can actually click on any of the icons at the bottom of the screen to get to screen with bookmarks along the top for comments, show notes, chapters and transcripts.

As you can see, the chapters list clearly shows the links but not the photographs in this view, but you will see the photograph back on the main Play Screen. Within this list, click on any play icon to skip to that chapter.

On TrueFans, you may simply be able to scroll down to see the bookmarks for chapters, transcripts, show notes, etc.

But you may also be on another screen, in which case click on the fourth icon from the left, which I've put my glasses on to decipher and have seen is a closed book.

The chapter title in this view is the link, and if you've clicked on any of the links in chapters for this episode, you will have been delighted to have visited creativityfound.co.uk because if I can't advertise my own business on my own, albeit completely different podcast, then when can I. Click on the play icon next to any of the chapter titles to start listening to that chapter.

On Podcast Guru, click on the icon that indicates lines of text under the photo in the Play Screen, then choose the chapters bookmark.

Click on the chapter title text or the photo to start that chapter.

Click on 'more' to open the link.

And on Pocket Casts, click on chapters at the top of the Play screen or on the title of the episode under the photo to go to the chapters list. The photos don't currently display in the list view, but they are usually visible on the Play Screen.

And that's all for now.

I'll be covering how podcasters can add chapters to their episodes once we've looked at transcripts and how to make and add them, since the two actions are inherently intertwined. Visit creativityfound.co.uk/podcasting to find out more about my guests and access lots of useful podcast resources.
