Podroll Update: Holiday Homework

A few updates from one of my favourite Podcasting 2.0 features today: Podroll – or Recommendations.

Exciting news, Pocket Casts has joined TrueFans in supporting this feature. I’ll walk you through how you can find these recommendations on the show screen and what they mean for your podcasting experience.

This tool is a fantastic way for podcasters to share their favourite shows, helping enhance discovery and interactivity for listeners.

This is an update episode, and so connects directly with a previous episode of Podcasting 2.0 in Practice.

If you are new to the subject of Podcasting 2.0, it would be a great idea for you to complete the Podcasting 2.0 in Practice course. This is a podcast series that looks at just one 2.0 feature – also known as a tag – at a time and teaches you what it is, why it’s good, and how to make it work. The course focuses specifically on how each feature can help podcasters with discovery, interactivity or monetisation – or a combination of the three.

Claire Waite Brown:

Welcome back to Podcasting 2.0 in Practice. I've got a super exciting update for this episode of Holiday Homework.

Since it is about my favourite Podcasting 2.0 feature podroll, bear with me as I repeat what I usually say as part of this intro. Or you can use the chapters to skip to the good stuff.

If you are new to the subject of podcasting 2.0, it would be a great idea for you to complete the Podcasting 2.0 in Practice course.

This is a podcast series that looks at just one 2.0 feature at a time and teaches you what it is, why it's good, and how to make it work, with a specific focus on how features can help podcasters with discovery, interactivity or monetization, or a combination of the three. The module on podroll was originally featured on episodes 18 and 19 in the podroll homework episode. Episode 19 if you're counting.

I made a confession that there was only one app that supported podroll, as opposed to a number of hosting companies that supported it. I also discussed some people's displeasure with the term podroll. So to the update in TrueFans, previously the only app supporting this feature.

The term now used is recommendations. You will find recommendations on the show screen, the screen that gives you the info about the podcast as a whole, not an individual episode.

Locate the tabs that are under the icons or perhaps under a photo of the show's host and their superfan, as in this instance. Scroll to the right and between reviews and leaderboard you'll see the Recommendations tab.

In the chapter art you can see some of the recommendations I have made for this podcast.

As I hinted earlier, there is another app that now supports the 2.0 pod roll tag and I'd like to give lots of imaginary extra credit marks to Pocket Casts for implementing this feature, which if you listen to the podroll episode with Jordan Blair, you will know is a brilliant tool to allow podcasters to recommend other great shows that they love. On the show screen you will see three tabs under the icons, the third one along being you might like.

Click here to see the shows recommended by that podcaster.

Now if a podcaster does not have their own podroll like this show, since Captivate, my hosting company still hasn't added support for this feature, Pocket Casts will use their own algorithm to suggest shows for you.

You will know whether the shows listed here are recommendations from your actual podcaster by the phrase Shows recommended by the creator at the top of the list. Thanks so much for listening.
